On The Go

Back in August whilst we were on holiday in Cornwall, I had a bit of a spending spree on yarn. I mentioned it in a blog post at the time, however, as well as the yarn I blogged about, I also bought more for a new project.

Cute & Easy Crochet by Nicki Trench is a book I've had for a while now. Although I haven't made any of the projects in it, it's provided lots of inspiration.

I've lusted after this Springtime Throw for a long time, the colours go together so beautifully, and it's this photo which has inspired my current project, my On The Go Blanket.

My budget won't stretch to the suggested yarn so I'm using Stylecraft Special DK in similar shades, Meadow, Grape, Pomegranate, Soft Peach, Lemon, Cloud Blue and Cream. I'm not following the pattern of the Springtime Throw, I'm making granny squares in three rounds, two different colours separated with cream and they'll eventually be joined with cream too. I've worked out that I can make thirty different squares with these colours, though I'm not yet sure how big I want the blanket to ultimately be. Suffice to say, I'll need a few squares of each.

So why is it called my On The Go Blanket? Well, when I was on holiday, I was crocheting Daniel's Ripple Blanket. It was quite a size by then and wasn't very convenient to drag around with me on outings so I decided I needed something more portable. I don't think there's anything more convenient to carry around than granny squares, and so the idea was born. This isn't a blanket I'll work on at home, it's something that's portable enough to take with me away from home, so it's something I'll be working on when I'm On The Go.

Another long term project.

    1. I think it will be a way off yet. No plans for any trips out at the moment, it's far too cold.

  2. Hi Jo

With crochet you can get inspiration from a lot of different patterns I think the Stylecraft wool will workout just as well and the colours you have chosen are lovely. It will also keep you occupied and get you ready for the Spring. And obviously by these photo's it's given you a chance to play with your camera some more.

    1. I'm really pleased with the colours. It won't be as muted as the Springtime Throw, but I think they'll work well together. I have to confess that I used my old bridge camera for these photos. I tend to only use the DSLR when I'm out and about. The bridge camera hangs about the house so it's much easier to put my hands straight on it when I need it.

    1. Thank you. I think granny squares look so different once they've been put together as a blanket. All the colours seem to come together somehow.

  4. Smaller, portable projects are much better than carting a great blanket around. Just finished mine.

    1. That's what I thought. It may take me some time to complete this blanket but it's a good project to have to take with me places.

  5. It's going to be wonderful. I love those colors and I know just what you mean about needing an on-the-go project; my son's granny stripe is getting too big to carry around now and I've been thinking about starting something with smaller parts so I can carry work with me.

    1. I love the colours, I think they're going to work so well together. It's hard to carry a large project about so I think this is just what I need when I'm out and about.

    1. I don't think I would have put these colours together if I hadn't had the inspiration from the book but I do like how they're working out. It's good to have a project I can just pick up to take out with me instead of lugging a huge project around.

    1. It's a good book, I've had my eye on the Springtime Throw since I got it. My blanket won't look anything like it, but the inspiration is taken from it.

  10. Really soft and pretty colour combination.
Good idea to have different projects for different times, however or wherever they get completed you end up with something beautifully homemade.

    1. I don't think the colours I've chosen are quite so soft as the ones recommended in the book but I still like how they're working together. I always used to be a one project at a time girl but that's slowly changing.

    1. That's one thing about crochet, it's far more portable than knitting. I think the colours will make this blanket very different from anything I've made previously.

    1. I think granny squares are the easiest thing for on the go, they're quick and easy and most importantly, portable.

  14. What a pretty blanket! Crocheting this over the winter months will be nice as you can remember, in the darkest days and longest nights, how lovely spring is!

    1. That's very true. I'm not a winter person, I love summer, so it will give me something to focus on.

  15. I bought that pattern back in the summer as I too fell in love with it. Unfortunately though I fall in love with almost all afghan/throw patterns (especially granny square ones) and secondly I do not have anywhere near enough time to actually make what I covert! Look forward to seeing the throw finished.

    1. It's a gorgeous throw, isn't it? I know what you mean about being short on time, but you could treat it as a long term project as I'm treating this. I don't think this one will be completed any time soon.

  16. Nice colors, I too have this book, it does have some lovely ideas in it. Agree with you about the grannies being more portable. Wonder how big you will make it. :)

    1. I haven't made any of the projects in the book but it's given me lots of inspiration. I'm not sure how big I'm going to make it yet, I suppose I'll just carry on with it until I've had enough.
