A Pear Of Crumbles

I made a start using up some of the pears which I mentioned a couple of posts back. It was my mum's birthday on Thursday, 79 years young, so I made a couple of pear crumbles, one for us and one to take round for my mum and dad, makes a change from birthday cake, and my mum loves a good pudding with custard. I've never used pears in cooking before, but they were very good in a crumble.

I had every intention of making an apple streusel cake this weekend, substituting the apples for pears, but time has run away with me. Yesterday, I got up and cleaned the house, then we took Archie to be trimmed, visited the garden centre and had a trip to the allotment before being summoned to York to take a letter to Daniel which had been delivered here and which he was waiting on. Whilst there, we took pity on the poor student that he's become and took him shopping, before doing our own shopping, so a full on day all in all.

Today, I got up and did my washing and ironing, then I spent the best part of the day shopping with Eleanor for things she needs to take with her on a school trip to London. She goes in a couple of weeks so I wanted to get that out of the way. We also had a look for some bits she needs for the play she's in at the end of the month. Her theatre company is staging a production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, and she needs some bright coloured clothing to wear in one of the scenes, not the easiest things to find at this time of year, and she doesn't have anything at all suitable in her wardrobe. Of course she doesn't, why would I think otherwise? So another day has run away from me.

We've eaten some of the pears through the week, so there aren't that many left now. Thank you for all your suggestions of what to make with them, I've filed all the recipes you've given me, but I probably won't get round to making anything else with them now, but we've enjoyed them all the same.

  1. What a great idea to do a crumble rather than a cake! I think Mark would really approve of that (he's the crumble king in our family!!!) Jx

    1. I really wanted to make both, but ran out of time. I do enjoy a crumble though, they're one of my favourite puddings.

  2. The crumbles sound delicious. I'm glad you were able to find something to do with at least some of the pears. It sounds like a somewhat frustrating shopping trip but you're a brave woman and a good mom to take her. I am sure she will do beautifully in her play. :)

    1. I was surprised how delicious the pear crumble was, I usually use apples for crumbles and wouldn't have thought of making a pear crumble. Shopping centres are so busy at this time of year so shopping sprees hold no attraction for me. Still, at least we got sorted so that's something else to cross off my list.

  3. Jo it sounds as if you have had a busy weekend. I have had a very lazy day today, full of cold and didnt feel up to much so I've done a bit of crochet and a bit of blog posting/reading. Friday was a really busy day though so I reckon I deserved a day off feeling sorry for myself! Pear crumble is yummy and crumble wouldnt be crumble without custard for me!

    1. I'm sorry to hear that you're full of cold but it sounds as though you've had the best sort of weekend, keeping warm and doing a bit of crochet. I don't like custard so I always eat my crumble without, but it's still delicious.

  4. With all that going on I'm surprised you managed to find time to bake the crumble! Happy Birthday to your mum.

    1. The crumble was baked before the weekend otherwise I wouldn't have got that done either. I'm looking forward to a bit of relaxation now after the busy weekend I've had.

    1. Thank you, I only thought of it at the last minute. I'm hoping to sit and do a bit of crochet this evening, I think I've earned it.

  6. I don't know where the weekend has gone. Having sent you the Streusel cake recipe I thought I'd make an Apple one as I have some brackets in the basket but time just ran away. Took daughter for some driving practice fortunately she drove very well much to the relief of my nerves. Thank you for such lovely comments on my blog today. Heard from number two today so I'm much relieved.

    1. I was looking forward to making the streusel cake, never mind, I'm sure I'll make it at some point. It's been such a hectic weekend so I'm looking forward to a bit of a rest now. Glad to hear that the driving practice is going well, and also that you heard from number 2 today, that must put your mind at rest. Enjoy what's left of the weekend.

  7. It does sound like you've been busy. We went into Liverpool on Friday and it wasn't too busy at all. KL was doing the spending - she's been home for reading week, and she's had her second chest infection in a month - this one needed antibiotics, steroids and an inhaler. I'm so glad that she chose a uni which isn't too far away. Your crumble looks lovely - sometimes I mix pears with apples in one - scrummy!

    1. Sorry to hear that KL has been ill, I hope she's feeling better soon. This miserable weather won't help. Daniel doesn't have reading week, though he came home two weekends ago, it was nice to have him home. I shall have to remember to mix pears with apples, it's something I would have never thought of.

  8. I've made pear crumble before but it was with tinned pears. It was delicious so I expect fresh pears would give an even better result. :o)

    1. Tinned fruit is something I never buy, though my mum always had some in the cupboard when we were kids.

  9. Hi Jo, bet your crumbles were lovely, nice change from birthday cake too. This weekend disappeared fast! And it was a bit busy, I am starting to panic a bit though, I know people tend to growl when Christmas is mentioned but , these weeks are just flying past and I am behind!! Slow down! Hope you got to rest a bit yesterday. x

    1. My mum doesn't bake at all now so she was really pleased with the crumble I made her. I've made a start on some Christmas shopping, but I'd like to get more done, I really want to be finished early this year. I had a bit of a rest last night, but I've been busy again this morning, it never stops, does it?

  10. I am not really a dessert type of person - but I LOVE custard. I often buy a custard slice and just eat the filling - the dogs like this little treat as they get to eat the pastry and icing! lol!

    1. We don't often have desserts so this crumble made a nice change. You've got well fed doggies, pastry and icing.

  12. What a scrummy-looking dessert and such a thoughtful gift for your mother. It sounds like you've been having a busy time, but it is always better to be run off your feet doing something you enjoy than being quiet and not enjoying it, I think :)

    Best wishes,

    1. That's very true, though I can't class shopping as something I enjoy doing, especially on a weekend when shopping centres are jam packed, I'd rather be doing something else. I know what you mean though. My mum enjoyed her crumble, desserts are something she seldom has these days so it made a nice change for her.

  13. How lovely to make the crumble for your mum, a real treat to have something you enjoy so much made for you on your birthday.
Your weekend sounds non stop what with one kind of shopping or another with the housework thrown in for good measure!

    1. I'm glad I got the shopping done, that's one less thing to think about now. It was a busy weekend one way or another, but I finally got to have a sit down on Sunday evening.
